Hiking from the "M" makes this trail SO accessible from town! (I went REALLY early and it wasn't overly crowded, but it is a v popular trail). A bzn classic & it's just gorgeous.
Tin box on top marks the top summit of Baldy & it is full of some pretty interesting letters!
A mtn lion did steal someone's dog off of this trail in spring of 2024 so always be animal aware folks!
Fairy Lake
Elevation Gain: 50 feet
Length: ~1 mile out & back
Difficulty: My mom could do it (V. EASY)

Even though its in town I'd still bring bear spray! I've seen a black bear here & had an eerie run in with an animal following me.
Always good for leaves & flowers & sunsets. Honestly might be my fav trail near town.

When I first moved to Boze I asked around about hikes & a lot of people said this was their fav in the area. I can see why it is stunning & has a ton of lil waterfall off shoot trails!
I also quite like this trail in the winter & usually see ppl skiing on it. I even saw someone with a mountain bike with snow tires here once!!
If you don't do any off the waterfall off-shoots I think mileage is around 11mi.
Start of the trail is at Grotto Falls parking area!
One of the first trails to get snow & one of the last to lose it.
Think it is a popular backpacking spot for people hitting the peak the next day. Peak & lake is doable in a day, but it sure is a long one.

I went up the 5185 Trail & down the 5186 trail. The few ppl I saw were going the opposite way, but I quite enjoyed the route I took.
Trail was hecka dry when the rest of Boze was mud. It is a great early season hike. The loop was in the sun the whole time, but up to the ridge line was a bit more shady.
View of the Lady of the Rockies & The Berkeley Pit. The Pit is Butte's superfund toxic lake that once was an open pit copper mine.

Pros: dope trail & views, water for pups in the mid section of the hike, we were the only ppl on the trail.
Cons: Road to trailhead partially closed so it added an extra 2 mi & had some decent sections in the sun.
Both: Mid-section of trail was very overgrown & full of berry bushes so could be a good spot for foraging, but for sure was the beariest trail I've been on in a minute. For sure a griz area being right outside of ol Yeller.
West Pine Creek Trail

Home of the tallest western larch in the world
Gus is two feet taller than the statue of liberty & 1,000 years old.
Many of the trees in the Girard Grove are over 600 years old.
The grove was named in memory of James W. Girard, a U.S. Forest Service employee who started working out of Seeley Lake in 1908.
Cool Jim facts
He determined the timber volume of the entire US when he served as Chief of Forest Surveys.
Found trees in Alaska hardy enough for aircrafts in WWII, & his point system for measuring trees is still used today!
